HERE IS HOW TO SET UP OUTLOOK EXPRESS TO SEND AND RECEIVE EMAIL WHILE CONNECTED TO THE
XPLORNET NETWORK
Other eMail programs like Thunderbird, Eudora etc. will have the same settings somewhere in their menus.
  • 1 SEND: The part of your email program that sends email is called SMTP which means Simple Mail Transfer Protocol with emphasis on the word transfer. There are excellent instructions for setting Outgoing eMail on the Xplornet Web Site. Click on these words to see these instructions.
    • When you send email your are TRANSFERRING it from the Xplornet network to its destination.
    • For this reason ALL email transferred from the network must specify the Xplornet SMTP server.
    • If you have MORE THAN ONE eMail address make sure they ALL have the same smtp set.
      Your Xplornet SMTP server is...
      smtp.xplornet.com

ALL YOUR RiverLink EMAIL ADRESSES MUST HAVE THIS VALUE

The most important thing to remember is that the outgoing Xplornet SMTP server requires verification. This is provided by your Xplornet eMail address and password, NOT your RiverLink eMail address. If you have forgotten your Xplornet email settings call Xplornet 1 866 841 6001 and ask them what they are.

  • 2 RECEIVE: The email that you RECEIVE is stored in a special computer called a POP3 server. In order for Outlook Express to download the email that is waiting for you, you must tell it where your POP3 server is. (POP means Post Office Protocol which is a very appropriate description of a place where your mail is held waiting for you to pick it up.)

Sympatico has a POP3 server, IGS has a POP3 server and RIVERLINK has a POP3 server.

Outlook Express will receive email from ALL of your different email addresses so long as you tell it where to look (and of course so long as you have an account still open with the provider).

Your RiverLink POP3 server is...
riverlink.ca
Only RIVERLINK adresses will use this server

  • 3 EXAMPLE:
Below are the main steps showing how to enter these Outgoing eMail settings into Outlook Express.
Open up your own copy of Outlook Express and follow along with these examples.
    • Step 1. Open Outlook Express and click on Accounts in Tools menu....

    • Step 2. Click on your RiverLink email address to highlight it, then click the Properties button.

    • Step 3.This will open a new page showing the properties of that particular eMail address. Your Outlook Express should look like this but with your email address.

Step 4. Now click on the Servers Tab as shown below. Remember, this example is for those who are connected to the Xplornet network

      1. Make sure your incoming mail server is POP3
      2. Enter the correct value for your POP3... riverlink.ca

      3. Set the Outgoing SMTP to smtp.xplornet.com ... see the Xplornet Web Page for more information on their SMTP setting. (Why don't I show their SMTP instructions here? Because at some point Xplornet may change the way their SMTP is set up and I would then have to change this web page yet again.)
      4. Where it says Account name: enter your own RiverLink eMail address. Note that your eMail address is also your account name.
      5. Enter the password for that particular email account. The RiverLink default password is riverlink1. You can change that to your own password by logging in to the RiverLink WebMail server.
      6. Make sure all the other settings are like the example. Close all the small widows by clicking OK and you are done with that RiverLink account.

    • Now repeat this procedure for ALL your RiverLink email accounts.
